Here is something rare and wonderful – a Mario Beauregard SJ model, built during 2008 in Beauregard’s one-man shop outside of Montreal, Quebec.

Many Canadian luthiers have learned through the influences of Jean Larrivee and the many people who have worked for him – to name a few, Grit Laskin, David Wren, Sergei de Jonge, Gordon Barry, Linda Manzer – but there are other streams as well.

Mario Beauregard worked in Sales and Repairs at Tom Lee Music in Vancouver, but then as his interests developed he worked with luthier Robert D’Crivouir, then went to the Roberto-Venn luthier school. There he met Ervin Somogyi and was invited to study with him in Oakland, California. During that time, he also studied archtop construction with the late Taku Sakashta in Santa Rosa. Eventually, he moved back to Quebec and for four years was the designer for LaSiDo, which is run by Robert Godin.

Now he works from his small shop and acts as a consultant. His guitars are produced individually and are highly sought after.

This Mario Beauregard SJ guitar was built during 2008 and pairs a European Spruce top with a spectacular, top grade set of Rosewood for the back, sides and head plate. The neck is Mahogany, and the fingerboard and bridge are Ebony. The backstrap is burled Walnut and the rosette is Abalone. The nut and saddle are both bone. For tuners, Gotoh 510 models are installed. There is also a pickup wired to and endpin jack.

This specific guitar was used by Antoine Dufour to record his 2010 album ‘Convergences’ and tour to support it, and can be heard and seen in the YouTube video link above. Yes – it’s the same guitar. The top was originally natural, and was given a sunburst finish by the builder in 2012.

This guitar plays very well and cleanly, with its action currently set at 4/64ths treble and 5/64ths bass – quite low for an acoustic.

Here is how the current owner describes this exceptional instrument:

“This guitar is one of a kind. The basic volume projection can allow the player to play with a lot of nuances. It never sounds ‘boomy’ when played loudly in a flatpicking style. But in my opinion it’s a better fingerstyle acoustic instrument, for those who like alternate tunings. The separation of each note is clearly defined, and the balance on every note is perfect over all the harmonic register. It’s a woody sounding guitar.”

An arched top, hard shell case is included.
