It’s not so common these days to see something like this pre-war Martin 00-17 Mahogany steel string, built during 1939.
The moderate-sized 00 is one of Martin’s oldest body designs. It was launched in 1898, with the first 00-17 appearing in 1908 when three were built.
The Style 17 dates to 1856 and was built until 1898 with Spruce top and Rosewood for the back and sides. The style was built again from 1906 to 1918 with Spruce top and Mahogany back and sides, then re-launched in 1922 with a Mahogany top as Martin’s first steel string guitar. In the very early 1930’s, these were modified to accept the ‘new’ 14-fret necks demanded by former banjo players. It stayed in production until 1961, and was built again during 1967.
This Martin 00-17 example dates to 1939, built in Nazareth Pennsylvania, and is in structurally original and good condition. It has had some refinishing, possibly just over-sprayed. It plays well, and has a warm, rich tone. The smaller body size and moderate volume make it very comfortable to play.
