Martin D-28 Dreadnought Guitar

The Martin D-28 Dreadnought is the standard by which all others are judged. Constructed of solid East Indian rosewood for the back and sides, a Sitka spruce top and mahogany neck with Ebony fingerboard and bridge, this instrument has been a favorite of artists from Hank Williams Sr. to Jimmy Page.

The newest version of the Martin D-28 Dreadnought  features vintage appointments such as open geared tuners, an aged toner top and a tortoise pattern pickguard. The neck has a new low oval profile for a comfortable playing experience. The D-28 now also features forward shifted bracing for even greater top vibration!

First appearing in 1931, the Martin D-28 Dreadnought model was based on models built for the Oliver Ditson company in 1916.  These were produced for a few years for Ditson, but Martin didn’t make it a regular model at the time.   At first, it had a 12-fret neck but in 1934 the 14-fret neck was added, a nod to migrating banjo players.   At the time, the top binding enclosed a Herringbone pattern purfling layer, but during WW2 Martin’s stock of this ran out and as the supplier was in Germany, restock was not possible.   The multi-line purfling seen here has been used since, with Herringbone now available on select models.
