The Martin D28 Marquis, here with Adirondack Spruce top, was the top shelf of the Style 28 Dreadnought line, re-creating historic designs with premium materials. The Marquis and Golden Era models went out of production in 2017, and were replaced with the Authentic series.
Here we’re looking at a Martin D28 Marquis, built during 2008 at the Martin plant in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. This example pairs an Adirondack Spruce top with Indian Rosewood for the sides, back, and head plate. Typical of Martin guitars, the body blocks and neck are Tropical Mahogany, and as part of the Style 28 feature set, the fingerboard and bridge are Ebony. The finish is clear gloss Nitrocellulose Lacquer, now with a light amber tint from its age and exposure to light and air.
This fine guitar is in very good condition with very light wear. Fret wear is at the level where a light polish will bring them to looking new. It sounds great, and once played in, the Adirondack top will make this a fantastic sonic cannon – as is, it is rather loud and projects well. Adirondack Spruce tends to maintain its tonal characteristics a bit better than other species when played heavily, such as in a Bluegrass context. But even with that capability, it works very well when fingerpicked or flat picked at ordinary levels.
