The Twelfth Fret ~ Since 1977 ~

❌SOLD❌ Martin D35 Dreadnought Steel String Guitar, 2002

Instrument Categories: , ,

The Martin D35 appeared in 1965 as builders adapted to changing Brazilian Rosewood supplies; the D35’s three piece back used panels too small for a two-piece back. By 1969, Martin had officially stopped use of Brazilian, though some occasionally appeared on D35’s as late as 1973, in favour of Indian Rosewood.

Despite a false start – the earliest models had overly-braced backs that reduced volume – the Martin D35’s warm yet crisp tone rapidly gained popularity with bluegrass, country and folk guitarists, and singer-songwriters.

This example dates to 2002, was built at the Martin plant in Nazareth, Pennsylvania – well into the Indian Rosewood period – and is in very clean, well maintained condition. The woods used are Sitka Spruce for the top and braces, Indian Rosewood for the back, sides and headplate, Mahogany for the neck, body blocks and back braces, and Ebony for the bridge and bound fingerboard. The finish is in great shape, with the lacquer slightly sinking naturally into the pores. There is light finger or pick wear on the pick guard – it’s why the pick guard is there! The guitar plays cleanly at a standard action height. The saddle is fairly high, so there is lots of space to lower the action should this be desired. This model was built after Martin started installing adjustable truss rods rather than a square stiffener, so adjustments are easy.

Fret wear is light.

The original Martin molded hard shell case is included.

Here is the builder on the current Martin D35:

“A distinctive three-piece back and antique white binding around the fingerboard set it apart. Expressive quarter-inch straight bracing gives it balance and power for any situation.

Premium East Indian rosewood, Sitka spruce, and a timeless Dreadnought shape have made the D-35 the choice for pickers, strummers, and players from Johnny Cash to Seth Avett. Also available in Sunburst and Ambertone finish.”
