This Masaki Sakurai Concert-R Spruce top classical guitar from 2001 is a good illustration of the higher ends of Japanese guitar construction.

Masaki Sakurai is the nephew of the late, renowned guitar builder Masaru Kohno. After taking an electrical engineering degree, he chose to work at his Uncle’s Tokyo guitar shop. Under this excellent tutelage, his instruments quickly became top quality. In turn, Kohno’s grand-son So Kimishima also joined the family business 15 years ago.

The Masaki Sakurai Concert-R is still in production, and appears in their current catalog. It features a Cedar or Spruce (as seen here) top, Spruce bracing, solid Indian Rosewood for the sides, back and head plate, Mahogany for the body blocks and Spanish Cedar (Cedrela odorata) for the neck, Ebony for the fingerboard and neck stiffeners, and finally Central South American Rosewood for the bridge. The top finish has a ‘cashew’ tint. The tuners are Fustero style models possibly by Rodgers or Gotoh.

This wonderful guitar is in very good, clean condition with only the slightest wear. Its tone is warm and full, but it appears to have not been played extensively so with work it will develop fully.

The original TKL double-arched hard shell case is included.
