Here is a treat – a Brian Monty Flying V Korina solidbody, hewing closely to the original V built in very small and diminishing numbers in 1958 (81 built) and 1959 (17 built).

The Flying V was one of three designs for Ted McCarty, then president of Gibson, by Seth Lover. The other two were the Explorer, which like the V made it into production, and the Moderne, which didn’t make it past the prototype stage. The Explorer was further modified by famed auto designer Ray Dietrich into the fairly successful Firebird. Both the Flying V and Explorer were originally constructed with African Limba, a wood Gibson renamed ‘Korina’ for marketing purposes.

This Monty Flying V is based closely on an early model. It uses the same Korina construction for the body and neck with Rosewood fingerboard, and the strings feed from the back through the body and a metal V-shaped plate on the top. That string-through design V-shaped plate was replaced by a standard tune-o-matic and stop tailpiece for most of the ‘reissue’ models that started to appear in 1967. The output jack is on a round plate near the end of the treble side, moved to the pickguard on later models. The distinctive tapered headstock sports a Mother of Pearl ‘Monty’ logo and a fleur-de-lys – it is made in Quebec, after all. The pickups are either Vineham or Parson Street Golden Age PAF reproductions.  An indication of Monty’s attention to detail is the rubber friction pad on the treble side, an aid when playing in a sitting position.

This Monty Flying V is a great guitar. It’s light weight and resonant, extremely well made and finished, and is a joy to play. If you need – or just want – a guitar close to the original Flying V, this could well be it.

The original hard shell case is included.
