Here’s a rarity and bit of history – a MusicMan Stingray 4 Bass, built during 1978 in Fullerton, California by CLF Research for MusicMan. CLF stood for Clarence Leo Fender. MusicMan was founded in 1974 and in 1975, Leo Fender’s non-compete agreement lapsed and he became president of Music Man. Until 1979, MusicMan guitars and basses were built by Leo’s other company, CLF Research. After 1979 and until Music Man folded in 1984, Grover Jackson built the bodies and necks and assembled the instruments.

On March 7 1984, Ernie Ball bought the remains of MusicMan and moved production to his own factory in San Luis Obispo, California, where Ernie Ball MusicMan instruments are still made.

Here we’re looking at a MusicMan Stingray 4 Bass in overall good condition with lots of natural finish checking to the gloss black Ash body.   The neck draws from Leo Fender’s original Maple neck design, with integrated Maple fingerboard and with a Walnut ‘skunk stripe’  covering the rear-mounted truss rod channel.   The neck finish is worn through in some areas.     Fret wear is very light,  which is unusual for a bass of this age.   Closer examination of the fingerboard suggest that the neck was refretted without also refinishing; next to most frets, the finish appears to have been cut or chipped and later touched up.    The bass plays very well and is ready to go for years yet!

The MusicMan Stingray 4 Bass was introduced in 1976 as one of the company’s first models,  and is still built by Ernie Ball MusicMan.

A non-0riginal hard shell case is included.
