The new Vega Vintage Star open back banjo by Deering has arrived, featuring a classic Dobson-style tone ring, Ebony fingerboard and Satin finish! At the heart of the Vintage Star lies a stunning Dobson tone ring. Originally patented by Henry Dobson in 1881, the Dobson balances the low ends with clear highs, and adds just the right amount of sustain to the banjo. The brass Dobson glows from behind the renaissance head, which itself sits on a thinner walled, 12” violin grade maple rim. A knotless tailpiece tops off the set up to produce a classic old-time tone.

Now discontinued, the Eastman AR803ce Archtop Electric features a 16 inch wide, single Venetian cutaway body with carved, solid Spruce top and Flame Maple back. The sides and neck are also Flamed Maple, with Ebony for the bridge, headplate and bound fingerboard. Hardware is gold coloured, with Gotoh tuners bearing ‘Imperial’ deco-style stairstep tuner buttons. The original Ebony / metal tailpiece has been replaced with a standard trapeze model.

MORE →The Gibson 1960 Les Paul Special Double Cut Reissue is a great take on a classic, straight ahead solidbody that delivers plenty of tone via a pair of P-90 pickups. Often referred to as the ‘Les Paul DC’, the Les Paul Special first appeared in 1955 along with the Les Paul Junior, both as lower cost alternatives to the carved-top Les Paul model. Aside from lacking the carved Maple cap and simpler hardware, the Special and Junior construction was similar to the carved-top Les Paul.

Initially, these models had either Maple or Indian Rosewood fingerboards, but Rosewood was quickly dropped in favor of Ebony. This example dates to 2019 and features the classic Stratocaster body with deeper contours.
