Pensa Custom MK-1 Tobacco Sunburst, 1995

Brand:

Instrument Categories: , ,

Shown here is a Pensa Custom MK-1 built during 1995 in New York City by Rudy Pensa. The MK designation stands for Mark Knopfler.

The original MK model was designed by Pensa and Knopfler to create a guitar capable of sounding like the 1961 Strat and 1958 Les Paul Knopfler was using on stage, allowing him to use only one guitar.

From 1984 to 1990, John Suhr was one of the main builders and the guitars were labelled R-Custom, then Pensa-Suhr. Suhr left to be senior master builder at Fender Custom Shop and the name changed to Pensa Custom.

The Pensa Custom MK-1 features a Mahogany body with a carved highly figured Maple cap, and a Birdseye Maple neck with Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard. Its body finish is a nitrocellulose lacquer Tobacco Sunburst, while the neck finish is satined on the back and gloss for the headstock front.

The hardware includes a gold-plated Schaller Floyd Rose design double locking trem system, gold Gotoh tuners and an SSH pickup set with a coil-split operated by a push-pull tone control. There is some expected wear to the saddles where the player’s hand rested.

This Pensa Custom MK-1 is in overall good shape with an amount of finish chipping around the body. It plays very well, and the Schaller Floyd system works well.

Sold with its original hard shell case.
