The Godin Multiac Steel is an example of design created to address a practical problem – acoustic feedback at stage volumes.
The Multiac series draws from the Gibson Chet Atkins CEC – Cutaway Electric Classical – which allowed Chet to play a nylon string guitar on a full stage without worry of howling feedback. The CEC was followed by steel string versions, but over time they were all removed from production lines. Godin improved key elements, including adding a bolt-on neck, significantly lighter chambered body, and a range of bridges and pickups. This range included a multi-element piezo bridge pickup mated to circuitry with six outputs, allowing the guitar to drive a synthesizer. These guitars have been used extensively by working professionals since their introduction.
Here we’re looking at a Godin Multiac Steel HG – High Gloss – built during 2018 in La Patrie, Quebec. The body top is Spruce, while the back and neck are Mahogany, and the fingerboard and bridge are Richlite. For pickups, the bridge has an L R Baggs Element transducer and preamp, and the neck position pickup is a Seymour Duncan ‘lipstick’ model. There are two output jacks; one is ‘mono’, combining the two pickup outputs while plugging into the second one separates the pickups to the two jacks. The top controls include a three-position tape saturation simulation, as might be heard on a vintage tape recorder. The set of five sliders control master volume, treble, mid and bass, then pickup blend. There is also a ‘phase’ button, and finally the ‘standard’ volume and tone controls. The required standard 9v battery is conveniently located on the back of the guitar.
Overall this Godin Multiac Steel is in good working order, with light wear and a small scuff on the top. These are very well made, versatile guitars that not only deliver versatile tone and playability, but are quite durable.
