The Rick Turner Renaissance RB4 Standard Fretted Bass is part of Turner’s innovative line of thin, lightweight basses designed to produce tones from acoustic to solid rock!

Rick Turner has had a varied and interesting career. Starting with an learning repairs in Boston, he moved to New York City where his band came to the point of breaking – and broke up. Moving to Marin County just near the Grateful Dead, Turner started back into repairs and building, in particular low impedance custom pickups. That quickly led to the founding of Alembic. After some years, Turner left, worked with Gibson for a time, and again has his own shops.

The Turner Renaissance RB4 Standard is one of three trim levels for three RB versions – with 4, 5 or 6 strings, and fretted or unfretted. These are a chambered design, the Standard with Cedar top, and Walnut for the sides and back. The bridge is Rosewood with Bone saddle. The neck is Maple with Indian Rosewood fingerboard and a faux-tortoise head plate and ‘R’ logo. The faux-tortoise plastic is also used as binding for the top.

For electronics, Turner uses the D-Tar system with an under-saddle element and top-bout mounted controls.

This example dates to approximately 1999, with the first two digits of the serial – stamped in two sections, on the upper facets of the headstock – as 99. This instrument does have an amount of honest play wear and some small dents and dings. The top has two non-structural cracks, which could possibly be in the finish. Fretwear is light.

This instrument is sold with a Gig bag.

Here is Turner Guitars on the Rick Turner Renaissance RB4 Standard Fretted bass:

“These basses provide a rich palette of tones from realistic upright to cutting rock.

The Renaissance series delivers a much broader frequency range than traditional basses. Models include a four-string 34″ scale and a five-string and six-string 35″ scale with fretted or fretless fingerboards.

Thomastik-Infeld Acousticore or Jazz Flatwound strings deliver melodic, punchy tones right down to a thunderous low B. All in a bass weighing in at less than 5.5 pounds!

Constructed like true acoustic instruments, with bent sides and a braced tone wood top and back, the Renaissance series truly represents the best way to achieve acoustic tone plugged in.

The construction feature that sets our instruments apart is the Western Red Cedar center block that prevents feedback and yet provides an acoustically live foundation for the D-TAR Timberline pickup system.”
