Brand: De Jonge
Instrument Categories: Classical and Flamenco, Guitars
Seen here is a new Sergei de Jonge Classical Guitar with an elevated fingerboard, pairing a Cedar top with Black Limba for the sides, back and neck. The bracing is Spruce, the body blocks and linings are Mahogany. The bridge is Indian Rosewood and the fingerboard is Ebony. As is the case for most of de Jonge’s guitars, the finish is a hand-applied French Polish.
Sergei de Jonge has been building and teaching guitar building for many years and like a number of premiere Canadian builders, was one of Jean Larrivee’s early apprentices.
This Sergei de Jonge Classical is a modern take on the classical style. It carries an elevated fingerboard- actually the body tapers down, away from the fingerboard – allowing significantly improved upper-fret access. A full 650mm scale length is used, with a 52mm nut width. The fan-braced top is Red Cedar, and the sides, two-piece back and head plate are Black Limba (Terminalia Superba) – not an endangered or listed species, and used by Gibson on some historic models under the name ‘Korina’. The body blocks and linings are Mahogany, the top and back bracing Spruce. The fingerboard is Ebony, with an Indian Rosewood bridge.
Being a new guitar, this example has not developed its voice or projection, but it is full, rich and responsive. And it is certainly visually striking!
