❌SOLD❌ William Laskin 12-String Guitar, 1983

Instrument Categories: , , ,

William Laskin is one of the world’s premier guitar builders and engraved inlay artists, as well as a musician. As with many of Canada’s other current top builders, Laskin worked for a time with Jean Larrivee but has had an independent shop in Toronto for decades.

The William Laskin 12-string seen here is a wonderful guitar, with an interesting history and a well established provenance demonstrating its participation in folk music performance. Commissioned in 1982 from William Laskin by Garnet Rogers, it was also used by Stan Rogers for several months until his untimely death in June 1983. Since then it has been used in multiple tours, performance and recordings.

The guitar itself was built during late 1982 and into 1983 at the Toronto Laskin shop. It is a full body, cutaway 12-string. The top is Sitka Spruce, the back and sides are Indian Rosewood and the neck is maple, to improve strength and contribute to brightness, clarity and separation. The fingerboard, bridge and headplate are ebony. The engraved inlay sets are executed in sterling silver with no finish to allow for natural tarnish.

The inlays are one of the special features of this instrument. Laskin is exceptionally talented at conceiving and executing engraved inlays. Here, a dragon and celtic knot theme was chosen. As dragons are mythical beasts, it’s hard to conclusively identify species, but the headstock dragon seems to incorporate some visual reminders of a Phoenix. The heel cap is engraved with the initials G R, for Garnet Rogers.

This exceptional guitar plays well and is on overall good condition, with honest play wear but no marks from abuse.  There is an amount of natural lacquer checking but the finish is generally clean.    A Sunrise soundhole pickup has been installed for performance, wired to an endpin jack.  A black hard shell case is included.
