During the 1940's, the Gibson archtop was king of the guitar world, and the Gibson ES-300 was top of the heap for new electric guitar models. It was very popular among working musicians, and was now-famously used by Danny Cedrone for the solo of 'Rock Around The Clock' by Bill Haley and His Comets.

Electric amplification was definitely coming as the future of music performance, but manufacturers were not certain how this would look in practice. So, various standard models were modified to accept electification. Gibson's first step into the ES (Electric Spanish) world was the ES-150, followed by the ES-250 and then the ES-300. There was a lull between 1942 and 1945, when WW2 war efforts diverted materials and labour. Production of the ES-300 restarted in 1945, but in 1947 the cutaway version or ES-350 appeared. Sales of the non-cutaway ES-300 dropped and in 1953 it was discontinued.

The ES-300 had no less than four different pickup configurations with the final one, a single P-90 in the neck position seen here.

This guitar is in good working order, and plays and sounds great. It has been recently serviced in our repair shop. The tailpiece has been replaced, and the pickguard, typical of older plastics, is bowing somewhat. However, it still has a fantastic sound.

The original hardshell case is included.
