S/N: V6154 17, build during 1956 at the Gibson plant in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
For many people from the 1940s to the 1960s, instruments like the Gibson LG-3 were their first 'serious' guitar The next step up was professional models like the Gibson J-45, Dove, Hummingbird or even the J-200.

The Gibson LG-3 was produced from 1942 to 1964, when it was replaced by the Gibson B-25 N (the N denoting a natural finish on the top rather than sunburst). These smaller body guitars were very popular with students and casual players. The tops are spruce, with mahogany for the back, sides and neck. The fingerboards and bridge are rosewood, at this period Brazilian. The LG-3 was the 'top of the line' for LG models, and has binding around the top and back and a natural finish top. The LG-2 was a similar model, but has a sunburst finish (and was replaced with the B-25 sunburst). The natural finish on the LG-3 meant that Gibson had to use visually superior spruce on the top, since flaws wouldn't be hidden by the shading of a sunburst.

This example dates to 1956 and was built at the historic Gibson plant on Parsons Street in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It is in good playing condition, plays and sounds remarkably good. It has had one top crack repair and a sub-plate has been added to the bridge plate; this is done because over time, the ball ends of the strings can wear through laminate bridge plates. A solid maple or rosewood plate is added to provide a secure surface. In this case, it's maple. Replacing the bridge plate itself is often not practical. The bridge originally had full-width saddle; the slot has been filled with rosewood and a new saddle slot cut. The neck has been recently refretted, which is great for the playable life of the guitar, and much of the heaviest fingernail wear in the fingerboard was filled. The result is a guitar that plays very nicely. The original case would have been faux-gator fibre (aka cardboard) and this is long gone. A Japanese hardshell case is included.
