The Gibson Super 400 was the top of the heap when it was introduced in 1935. Except for six years during WW2, it's been in production in various forms. This is a 1964 Gibson Super 400 C model, a fully acoustic cutaway archtop. The body, with a carved spruce top and flame maple back and sides, is a full 18 inches across and 3 3/8 inches deep. It's big!

Long ago, a deArmond neck-mount pickup was added and the controls are mounted on the (replacement) pickguard and there is a standard end-pin jack at the tail block. In the original deArmond configuration, the output jack was usually mounted on the pickguard.

The truss rod cover has a CUSTOM banner and the initials F G are engraved below it - these may not be factory.

Typical of early 1960's models, the neck is fairly thin and narrow. This guitar has been used as intended, and so it's had a refret; it plays well and cleanly as is. The scale length is 25.5 inches, which increases the tension and helps the guitar produce more volume.

The sunburst nitrocellulose lacquer finish is original and is in good condition, with the expected natural checking and sinking. There are some small repairs and touchups around the binding on the back.

A newer Gibson case is included.
