The Deering Vega Senator banjo is the perfect “crossover” and parlor banjo. It is a light-weight, classic open back banjo, with a warm, woody tone with a lightweight tone ring that adds just enough punch and high-end clarity to play bluegrass with your buddies but warm, fat and woody enough to play in your parlor as a classic clawhammer or fingerstyle solo instrument.

Mike Ramsey Woody Banjo, 2008

The Mike Ramsey Woody 5-string is an open back traditional style banjo with frailing scoop, and featuring a wooden tone ring and rim. This example was built in Chapel Hill, NC.
Mike Ramsey began building banjos in 1986, and in 1990 shifted to full time banjo production in Lebanon, Ohio. In 1994 he moved to a new shop in Appomattox, Virginia, and again in 2005 to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Around 2010, he moved to Pittsboro, NC. For a time, he sold his banjos through Elderly Instruments under the name Chanterelle.

Rickard Maple Ridge Frailing Banjo, Antiqued Brass Hardware, 2015

The Rickard Maple Ridge Frailing Banjo is an open back, frailing style instrument built in Aurora, Ontario by Bill Rickard who also crafts the metal components. This lovely, very well made banjo features a three-piece laminated maple neck with a two-way adjustable truss rod, 25.5 inch scale ebony fingerboard with Frailing scoop, and ‘dot and star’ inlay pattern. The eleven inch diameter pot uses a 3/8 inch maple rim and a Rickard-made, Dobson style tone ring. Tuners are by Gotoh and are quite good.
