The Yamaha BB-N5A Nathan East was built from about 1995 to 2000, seen here in the 5-string fretless version. Like so many successful guitars and basses, the BB model (standing for Broad Bass) draws from the designs by Leo Fender, with a Maple neck bolted to a solid body.

Here we have a lovely 1972 vintage Yamaha GC-20D classical guitar with a spectacular Brazilian Rosewood set for the sides and back. The ‘GC’ stands for ‘Grand Concert’ and these models were the top of the line for Yamaha classical guitars, and are seriously good instruments. As the GC-20D, this model was built from 1971 to 1973.
This Yamaha GC-30A no.829 Grand Concert Brazilian Classical, dating to 1982, reflects the upper end of Yamaha guitar production in a concert grade instrument, featuring a pairing of a Red Cedar top and Brazilian Rosewood back and sides. This fine instrument was built during 1982 at the Yamaha home facility in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture and is signed by master luthier Mr. Toshio Kato. The GC or ‘Grand Concert’ line was conceived during the mid 1960s, when Yamaha arranged for three luthiers – Hiroshi Harada, Hideyuki Ezaki and Toshio Kato – to learn from Spanish master Eduardo Ferrer.
Introduced in 1976, the Yamaha SG2000 was considered perhaps the finest solidbody guitar from Japan – perhaps from anywhere – for its time. This design was the result of a collaboration between Yamaha and Carlos Santana to improve the Yamaha SG175. The result became the flagship of the Yamaha electric line until 1988. Around 1983, Gibson gave legal notice to Yamaha over the use of the ‘SG’ term, and Yamaha responded by changing the name for US models to SBG for Solid Body Guitar. However, in Japan, the SG name stayed until 1988 when the model was discontinued.

MORE →Here we have an original condition Yamaha SA 1200S, built during 1980 at Yamaha’s shops in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture. The Super Axe line had been built for fourteen years, and over time came to have a body shape more like a Gibson ES 3xx model. The headstocks were unique to Yamaha, and there was no risk of infringing on Gibson’s models. These were high quality instruments, with varying levels of decoration. After 1984, SA production was moved to Taiwan.
