❌SOLD❌ Gibson Herb Ellis Plus ES-165 Sunburst, 2004

❌SOLD❌ Gibson Herb Ellis Plus ES-165 Sunburst, 2004

Signature models are sometimes unusual, as is the case with the Gibson Herb Ellis Plus – the two pickup version of the Herb Ellis ES-165, built from 1991 to 2013. The late Herb Ellis was one of the more prominent American Jazz guitarists, and his 1943 spot in Glen Gray’s Casa Loma Orchestra (that name is meaningful to those in Toronto, but it seems the band is not related to the Gothic Casa Loma mansion) brought him to the attention of the jazz world.

❌SOLD❌ C. A. Potter Criterion Guitar, Circa 1905

❌SOLD❌ C. A. Potter Criterion Guitar, Circa 1905

There isn’t a lot of information about C. A. Potter Criterion guitars but these were built around 1905 in Cleveland, Ohio. This was a higher-end instrument with features taken from other makers. Notably, the neck and head joints show significant influence from the Martin-Stauffer instruments built around the 1830s. It’s interesting how some of the features found on these early instruments have come back in improved form. On the Potter Criterion, there is a bolt through the heel to secure the neck joint – an arrangement used in a slightly different way by many modern builders including Taylor.

❌SOLD❌ Scheerhorn L Body Squareneck Resophonic Guitar Koa, 2008

Here we’re looking at a Tim Scheerhorn L Body Koa square neck resophonic guitar, signed and dated – in two places! – by Tim Scheerhorn himself. The label, visible through the bass sound hole, lists a build date of 11/22/08, or November 22 2008, and bears Tim Scheerhorn’s signature. Those same pieces of information – the date and the signature – are also hand written on the inside of the back.

SOLD!! Bacon and Day Super Tenor Banjo, 1927

SOLD!! Bacon and Day Super Tenor Banjo, 1927

It’s always interesting to see vintage pieces like this Bacon and Day Super Tenor banjo, built around 1927 at the Bacon Banjos shop in Boston, Massachusetts. The Super Tenor was built from 1920 to 1927. From 1906 to 1920, noted musician Fredrick Bacon sold banjos under his own name. In 1921, he partnered with David Day and while the company name remained Bacon, many instruments were branded Bacon and Day. Bacon, and Bacon and Day, operated independently until 1940 when they were purchased by Gretsch;  the line was discontinued in 1967.

❌SOLD❌ National Dynamic Lap Steel Red and White, 1962

❌SOLD❌ National Dynamic Lap Steel Red and White, 1962

The National Dynamic Lap Steel was built from 1961 to 1968 for National String Instrument Corporation by Valco in Chicago, Illinois. National at this point had fallen far from its heyday after inventing the Resophonic guitar (plus mandolin and ukulele) to provide more volume to working guitarists. It was founded by guitarist George Beauchamp and luthier John Dopyera in 1927. Dopyera left National to form, with his brothers, the DoBro company in 1928 and produced single cone resonator models. Dopyera purchased a controlling share of National in 1932 and merged National and DoBro production. Many instruments like the National Dynamic lap steel were produced, along with matching amplifiers.
