Bacon & Day Montana Silver Bell No. 4 Tenor Banjo, 1927

Instrument Categories:

The fantastic piece seen here is a Bacon & Day Montana Silver Bell No.4 Tenor banjo, built during October 1927 in Groton, Connecticut. This model was available in both the longer Plectrum and shorter Tenor scale lengths. The ‘Montana’ name refers to an endorsement deal between Bacon & Day and Ray ‘Montana’ Coleman, a popular Vaudeville plectrum banjo player.

This Bacon & Day Montana Silver Bell No.4 example is, in complete, original condition (except for the newer head and an installed older Grover bridge, the original Paramount part is in the case) and includes the knee lever mute. Highly distinctive, almost all the metal parts are gold plated. The resonator and headstock backs are celluloid faux-pearl with engraved, painted designs.

This banjo has been recently been completely overhauled at The Twelfth Fret Repair shop, including having its metal parts professionally ultrasonically cleaned. The Maple neck has a carved heel and celluloid faux-pearl fingerboard with painted, engraved inlays. The tailpiece is the original Oettinger model, providing individual control over string tension. The rim is Maple, with gold plated tone ring coverings and tensioner fittings, and a celluloid band around the rim.

This spectacular instrument is in solid working condition, plays well and sounds great.

The original brown double arched hard shell case with zipped liner and dual string and tool pockets is included. The pockets include the tensioning tools and a number of Black Diamond Tenor banjo strings.
