❌SOLD❌ Fender Mustang Dakota Red, 1965

Instrument Categories: , , ,

Appearing in 1964 as part of a revamp of Fender’s entry level line, the Fender Mustang Dakota Red was the lowest priced model that included a tremolo tailpiece. The Mustang was also available in Blue and White. In 1965, following the sale of Fender to CBS, the Mustang – along with other models – received some immediate rebranding. The serial number plate and the tuning machine casings were stamped with a letter F. On the Mustang, the headstock was also enlarged, a change also applied to the Stratocaster.

The Mustang was discontinued in 1982, as CBS sold Fender back to its management group, who didn’t have production facilities yet. It was briefly offered from 1997 to 1998, and came back as a regular catalog item in 2016.

Here we’re looking at a Fender Mustang Dakota Red built at the Fullerton plant. Its serial number, 112880, can indicate 1966 or 1967 production, but the neck is dated 1965. It may be that the neck was built but the rest of the guitar not assembled for some time.

This 1965 Fender Mustang Dakota Red is in all original condition and has just been set up by The Twelfth Fret Repair Shop. It has a 24 inch scale; shorter scale versions were also available for younger students. It plays well, and is ready to go!

The original Fender hard shell case is included.
