The Gretsch G6120DSW TV replicates the 1955 and 1956 6120 models, with a lot of typical Gretsch Western motif trim and Western Orange Stain lacquer finish.

The very first Gretsch 6120 models were derived from a special order 1954 Streamliner Special, and presented to Chet Atkins as a potential signature model. This guitar featured a 16 inch single cutaway Maple laminate hollow body, and a second DeArmond DynaSonic bridge pickup as the Streamliner had only one pickup. Western style adornments include the distinctive G-Brand on the body, cactus and steer-head engravings on the Mother of Pearl block inlays and a steer head on the headstock, and the Orange stain.

The modified Streamliner 6120 prototype presented to Atkins also included a side-to-side vibrato designed by Doc Kaufman, that had also been used on the 1935 Rickenbacker Ken Roberts model, one of the earliest production electric guitars. On the Gretsch production models, this was replaced by the dramatically better Bigsby vibrato.

Here we’re looking at a Gretsch G6120DSW TV, built during December of 2012 at the Terada plant in Nagoya, Japan. It is in very good, clean condition but is not entirely original. The stock DynaSonic pickups were removed and replaced with TV Jones T-Armond models – check out the audio clips at this link. This is a fairly complex pickup design, with each magnetic pole piece individually adjustable via the small screws on the top – underneath, the adjustment mechanism is relatively bulky with the carrier, spring and screw assembly adding quite a bit of depth and weight.

The Bigsby with Narrow Vintage handle is original as is the brass nut, intended to provide a more consistent tone on open and fretted strings. Later, zero frets would be used to achieve the same effect.

The Gretsch G6120DSW is a great guitar for many styles, and it really shines on anything involving fingerstyle or chord melody. Country and Rockabilly styles are also a natural.

The original hard shell case is included.
