Considered one of their finest guitars, the Hagstrom Jimmy archtop electric was designed by Jimmy D’Aquisto, the renowned successor to John D’Angelico.
In 1969, Karl Erik Hagstrom was able to bring James D’Aquisto to Sweden to design and prototype guitars. Working at the Hagstrom Bjarton plant in Bjärnum, the Jimmy was laid out and ten guitars were built. Subsequently, about 480 were produced, of a more or less conventional design using a hollow 16 inch wide body with pair of F-holes and two pickups. Production ended when the Bjarton plant closed.
In 1975, D’Aquisto returned to Sweden and modified the design, taking it to one neck-mounted pickup and a single oval soundhole. From this point, 1,083 Jimmy guitars were built, 727 of the original design and 356 of the new.
These guitars feature a Birch laminate body, and a Birch neck with Rosewood for the bridge and bound fingerboard. Originally they were fitted with Grover Imperial tuners, Hagstrom humbucking pickups, and an H-motif trapeze tailpiece. The headstock has an engraved Mother of Pearl banner reading “Designed by James D’Aquisto”.
This Hagstrom Jimmy seen here was built during 1977 in Alvdalen, Sweden. It is in good, largely original condition, though the original tuners were changed to Schaller’s, and the neck pickup trim ring has a strip chipped off. The finish is in good clean shape, and the guitar plays well.
A hard shell case is included.
