From the 1950s into the 1960s, guitars like this Harmony H54 thinline electric were often sold as sets with amps like the Harmony H305A seen here – these were purchased as a set in 1960.

At the time, Harmony, based in Chicago, Illinois, was one of the largest US based musical instrument manufacturers, which is also to say one of the largest in the world. This came to an end a few years later, as imports from Japan and later Korea dramatically improved in quality, but were available at prices Harmony could not compete with.

Here we’re looking at something relatively rare – a Harmony guitar and amp set purchased together around 1960, and from their condition, it looks like they were quickly put away. These two pieces, especially the Harmony H54 guitar, are among the cleanest we’ve seen from that period. The nitrocellulose lacquer finish on Harmony guitars from the 1950s and 1960s was thin, and easily damaged with normal use. Here, there is an absolute minimum of that type of wear. There are no appreciable scratches, dents or dings. Fret wear is light and confined to the lower frets, particularly around the shape of a C chord.

The guitar is complete, and comes with its original gray faux-gator fiber (ie cardboard) case.

With the guitar is a Harmony H503A amplifier. This is a single-ended design based on the Fender 5E3 circuit as used on the classic 1950’s Tweed Fender Deluxe amp. With a pair of 6V6 power tubes, about 15 watts would be delivered to a single 12 inch speaker. Here, the original speaker has been replaced with a modern Jensen P12R, though the original is included.

This particular model was used by Neil Young during his ‘Squires’ period, from 1963 to 1965. They were built for Harmony by Sound Projects Company of Chicago and is virtually identical to Sound Project’s own brand, Lectrolab R500B.

The Harmony 503A amp is complete, and in as good condition as the H54 guitar.
