The Hofner New President Vintage is a full 16 inch body archtop guitar with one ‘Diamond’ pickup at the neck. It features a carved German spruce top, laminate flamed maple for the sides and arched back, European flamed maple for the neck, with ebony for the fingerboard, headplate, truss rod cover bridge, tailpiece and pickguard. This model was also known as the P55 in the US market.
Metal hardware is gold, except for the black volume and tone knobs mounted on the pickguard. The tuners are gold-plated Schaller models with ebony buttons, and the pickup is a Hofner Diamond by Kent Armstrong, mounted to the fingerboard tag and not touching the top.
The scale length is 25.275 inches (642mm), with a 1.743 inch (44.26mm) inch nut width. There are 24 frets, unusual for a jazz style guitar, and the neck joins the body at the 16th fret.
This 2005 Hofner New President Vintage Archtop Guitar is number 55 of 100 built, according to the label. It in good condition, with minor play wear.
Helping to date it to 2005 are the ebony truss rod cover, introduced in 2004 – and the rounded pickguard – this was changed in 2008 to a more angular design, the mid-brown varnish finish, introduced in 2005, and the serial number, above that of other 2004 models. Hofner discontinued production of archtop guitars in 2021.
The original grey Hofner hard shell, arch top case is included.
Hofner has produced quality instruments since 1887, and while with one notable exception hasn’t made huge inroads to the North American market, their instruments are easily found in Europe. The exception is of course the Hofner Beatle Bass!
