Journey Overhead Collapsible Steel String Acoustic Travel Guitar

Instrument Categories: ,

For as long as musicians have been travelling, portability has been an issue. Journey Overhead travel guitars combine a number of unique features, some patented, to deliver a professional quality guitar in an easily transported package. It comes with its own carry-on luggage!

At The Twelfth Fret we’ve carried Journey Overhead guitars for several years and they have consistently impressed us. Built using carbon fiber, the guitar is delivered with an airline carry-on size bag, is ready to play in under a minute, and can be packed away again in seconds. Most importantly, tone and playability are not sacrificed to gain this capability.

Interestingly, these guitars make use of the Manzer Wedge. This wedge is an innovation created by Canadian Luthier Linda Manzer, reducing the body depth on the bass side compared to the treble side. The result is that the guitar’s face is slightly angled towards the player, allowing them to hear the output more clearly.

As proof of the potential these instruments have, check out the clip below of Canadian Fingerstyle legend Don Ross and his Journey guitar!

The Twelfth Fret carries several versions of the Journey Overhead.  Carbon Fiber models are offered in black, orange, burgundy and blue tops.  Wood construction models carry natural or sunburst finishes.   Both lines use the same patented hardware and luggage set.

Shown here is the Matte Black Top, Carbon Fiber model OF660M.

Basic Features of the Journey Overhead Travel Guitar:

  • Rib Bevel (comfort cut) in the Carbon Fiber Guitar
  • Asymmetrical Manzer Wedge Design
  • Proprietary Under-Saddle Pickup System – Removable Neck Travel Guitar
  • Grover 18:1 Tuners – Collapsible Neck Travel Guitar
  • Stainless Steel Hardware

The primary differences between the Carbon and Wood models are the materials used. The Wood models use a top of solid Sitka Spruce for steel string models or Cedar for the classical version, and either Pau Ferro or Sapele laminates for the back and sides. The necks are Sapele with Pau Ferro fingerboard.

From the Journey Guitars website, here’s a description of the Overhead Carbon Fiber models. Many of these points also apply to the Wooden models, aside from the materials.

“A patented removable neck system allows this carbon fiber acoustic travel guitar to collapse into an airline carry-on size case for the traveling musician or backpacker. Carbon fiber composite material provides durability and can function in any climate without cracking, warping or changing tone.

The Journey Overhead carries a clear resonant tone with surprising volume and bass. The relatively small body size is able to carry a full sound through the use of a Manzer wedge which increases the air volume while keeping the top of the guitar close to the body for comfort. Also provides access to the upper frets through a Scoopaway™ at the neck. Notably, the body design uses a Manzer Wedge, an innovation by Canadian luthier Linda Manzer, to tilt the top towards the player.

Also includes tone-enhancing premium-grade bone nut and saddle, along with ebony bridge pins.
