The Larrivee D10 is based on the most popular guitar design – the classic D body square shoulder dreadnought that first appeared in the early 1930s. The Dreadnought itself was originally built around 1917 for the Oliver Ditson company, but as a round shouldered model. The first Square shoulder dreadnoughts appeared around 1931, under Martin’s own name and with the D model designation.

Here we’re looking at a Larrivee D10, dating to June 9, 1994 at the Victoria, BC Larrivee shop. It is in overall good condition and very playable. Construction pairs a Sitka Spruce top with Indian Rosewood for the back, sides, body binding and head plate. The neck is Mahogany, with Ebony for the bridge and ivoroid-bound fingerboard. The headstock sports a lovely Seahorse inlay executed in Mother of Pearl and Abalone, with torch inlays on the fingerboard, and an abalone layer around the top. As well, the head is partially ‘bound’ with a silver layer, a design by Tony Duggan-Smith that is still used on Larrivee models.

An L R Baggs Element pickup set is installed to and end pin jack, with the controls tucked under the bass side of the soundhole.

The finish on this Larrivee D10 is in good shape, with light play wear. Fret wear is light to moderate at the lower positions. A top crack has been repaired and cleated, and is stable.

Typical of Rosewood bodied dreadnoughts, this guitar has a full, rich, powerful voice. It has been played over its life, and has fully opened up.

The original hard shell case is included.

Jean Larrivee has been one of the most influential Canadian guitar builders. Developing an interest in building in the late 1960’s, Larrivee worked with Edgar Monch during his residence in Toronto – which accounts for the clear classical influence in his designs. Many now-prominent Canadian builders learned in the Larrivee shops, including David Wren, Grit Laskin, Linda Manzer, G W Barry and Tony Duggan-Smith.
