The Larrivee P-05 Mahogany is classed as a Parlor guitar, with a small body and shorter (24 inch or 610mm) scale length. The compact size of these instruments helps them in tighter spaces – for example, Col. Chris Hadfield took a Larrivee P-01 aboard the International Space Station.
The Parlor format was popular in the late 1th century and into the early 20th, when ensemble players started to compete for volume against other players and much louder instruments, particularly banjos. By the time Bluegrass groups became popular with banjos and fiddles, the Dreadnought was the choice to provide volume and bass.
Here we’re looking at a Larrivee P-05 Mahogany dated to March 29, 2012 at Oxnard, California and part of the Select series.
The materials choice follows Larrivee’s usual pattern of Sitka Spruce for the top, Mahogany for the sides, back, body blocks, linings, and neck with Maple binding around the body. The bridge, headplate and bound fingerboard are Ebony. The headstock decoration includes the silver boundary designed by Tony Duggan-Smith, and an inlaid Mother of Pearl Larrivee logo. The rosette features an abalone ring and the position markers are mother of pearl dots.
This is a fully acoustic model, with no added electronics. This example is very clean and has only very light wear. It plays well, and has a remarkably full and well balanced sound.
The original hard shell case is included.
