The compact body size of the Taylor T5Z Custom along with the 12” fretboard radius and jumbo frets provides a very comfortable playing experience for the electric guitar fan. The combination of two electric pickups and one acoustic pickup and a five way switch allows for an excellent variety of tones from acoustic strumming to high gain leads. The body shell and neck are both Sapele, with a bound Ebony fingerboard.
This version of the Taylor T5Z Custom features a Blackheart Sassafras top sourced from Australia, which has unique grain lines a lovely yellowish gold hue.
There are two main types of Sassafras, and they are quite different in characteristics and location. Taylor is using ‘Blackheart’ Sassafras, native to Tasmania and Australia and with the scientific name of “Atherosperma Moschatum”. The ‘Blackheart’ part of the name comes from the dark streaks or variegation in the grain.
The other type of Sassafras, with the scientific name for Sassafras is “Sassafras Albidum”, is native to eastern areas of the United States.
Both species grow 50 to 60 feet (15 to 20m) tall, with a diameter seldom exceeding 3 feet (about 1m). It is most often used for cabinetry, furniture, flooring, musical instruments and turning.
