The Klon KTR Professional Overdrive draws from the legendary, somewhat rare and highly sought after Klon Centaur, built from 1994 to 2008 by Bill Finnegan. An engineer by training and guitarist by inclination, Bill Finnegan wanted to produce an overdrive pedal that accurately replicated the harmonic richness of a tube amp at overdrive, but not sound like a pedal.

Here we have a ‘HB Proto’ version of The PRS 25th Anniversary Amplifier, a scalable 50 watt tube amp with 4×10 cabinet and dressed in matching paisley! This is a rare amp, built during 2010 and designed by Paul Reed Smith and Doug Sewell. Doug Sewell was by career an architect but his passion is to build amplifiers. The PRS 25th Anniversary Amplifier delivers a smooth, creamy tone and is based on the late 1960s ‘Plexi’ design. This example is apparently from the late prototype stage and is signed and numbered as 57 of 100 amps built. It uses a pair of EL34 tubes and delivers sound through four Celestion G10 Greenback speakers.

Here we’re looking at a Tone King Imperial sporting Turquoise / White dress and in great condition. This amp was hand built in Mark Bartel’s Tone King shop in Baltimore, MA. In 2010, Premiere Builder’s Guild had just purchased Tone King, which they held till they closed in 2016, ending Bartel’s association with the brand. Tone King is now part of Boutique Amps Distribution, and from 2017 Mark Bartel builds amps under his own name.

The Tone King Royalist 15 differs from most of builder Mark Bartel’s production in that focuses on recreating a UK sound, akin to the Bluesbreaker and Plexi but at reasonable power levels. Available in either 1×12 combo or split head / 1×12 cabinet configurations, the Tone King Royalist delivers 15 watts to a built-in attenuator, and then to a single 12 inch Eminence Texas Heat speaker. It is surprisingly light weight, yet it feels solidly built. For tubes, ut uses 3x12AX7 and 2x EL84s.
