This is a stock El Trovador resonator guitar, but with an extended 27″ scale length. Strung up with 15-69 gauge strings and set in standard baritone B to B tuning, I couldn’t believe the rich warm boom that came from the guitar with my first strum. The ring and articulation were classic National, but with a deeper drone and even longer sustain than usual (which is saying a lot!).

After producing a large bodied instrument under the Ditson brand, in 1931 the Martin Company began producing dreadnought guitars that carried the Martin name. The D–1, like the earlier Ditsons, was a mahogany body instrument, destined to become the D–18. With the D–2, Martin introduced what may still be the most popular style of steel string guitar, the rosewood body dreadnought. All of Martin’s early dreadnoughts had the 12–fret neck of the Ditson design. It wasn’t until 1934 that D–28s and D–18s officially were offered with the 14–fret neck that most consider the industry standard today.

I think that every time I walked by the Martin booth at this year’s NAMM music trade show, there was a large crowd around the Martin OM-21 Special! It really did make quite an impression with a LOT of dealers and it’s not surpising considering the features … bone nut & saddle, Gotoh butterbeans with pewter finish, crisply executed ebony pyramid bridge, wide fingerstyle-friendly string spacing on a low profile neck, retro looking rosewood binding and a premium tortoiseshell pickguard on the vintage toner Sitka top!
