The Michael Messer Lightning is a nickel-plated bell brass body, 1930’s style 12-fret single cone resonator guitar, intended to provide the tone and vibe of a vintage blues guitar, and it does this well. You get the vintage look and tone, but with modern playability and reliability at an affordable price. These are great instruments for fingerstyle and bottleneck blues playing. The Michael Messer Lightning has the characteristic attack, projection, resonance and volume of a ‘steel body’ guitar. As expected, it’s bright, but with a warmth and depth that avoid harshness and add a sweetness to the edge. The modern features include an adjustable truss rod.

The mahogany body National Reso-Phonic M-1 Tricone retains the lush complex trebles of the National Style 1 but the wood body changes the character of the bass response: in short, the bass is huge!

MORE →This C. Bruno and Son fretless banjo arrived here about 15 years ago and has been in storage ever since. As is often the case with my “projects”, it was forgotten for years. I recently came into a lovely set of Ivoroid friction tuners that reminded me of the Bruno banjo and its need for appropriate tuners. This 130-year-old set of friction pegs were typical of the 1880s or 90s. And since they are synthetic ivory, they are legal under the CITES regulations.

Based on the designs developed by Ignacio Fleta in the late 1950’s and 1960’s, these guitars feature stiffer tops and more robust construction, and of course specialized bracing patterns. They are characterized by a strong, warm, full tone with a lot of projection and volume available.
