Many guitar players find that they want to incorporate banjo tones, but don’t want to learn a new instrument. The stock Deering Boston Open Back 6 addresses this need, but we find that the tone is too harsh. So, we’ve had Deering mate the standard Boston 6 neck with a Vega Little Wonder wooden tone ring pot. This offers the warmest and fattest tone possible for a six string banjo, and brings the weight down to about 7 pounds.

You get the vintage look and tone, but with modern playability and reliability at an affordable price. These are great instruments for fingerstyle and bottleneck blues playing. The Michael Messer Lightning has the characteristic attack, projection, resonance and volume of a ‘steel body’ guitar. As expected, it’s bright, but with a warmth and depth that avoid harshness and add a sweetness to the edge. The modern features include an adjustable truss rod.
The mahogany body National Reso-Phonic M-1 Tricone retains the lush complex trebles of the National Style 1 but the wood body changes the character of the bass response: in short, the bass is huge!
