The Hofner 500/2 Club Bass Cavern spacing is a limited edition instrument based on the mid 1960’s hollow body single cutaway Club Bass, with ‘Cavern’ or ‘Close’ spacing pickups. The version seen here carries a ‘Relic’ vintage sunburst finish, and was shown at the 2019 NAMM extravaganza in Anaheim, California. This is a new instrument, delivering the look and tone of a vintage Club bass.

The Hofner 1961 Cavern bass was very popular in Europe during the late 1950s and early 1960’s. American built instruments were rare and expensive, and use by wildly successful bands such as The Beatles made everyone want one. At the time, the tiny Cavern Club in London was one of the key venues for aspiring bands to appear, and The Beatles played there so often the club name became closely associated with the band.

From 2004, this Dieter Hopf Gran Concierto features a radial-braced red cedar top, Amazonian Rosewood back and sides, ebony for the fingerboard and an acoustically ported ebony bridge. The neck is mahogany with an ebony stiffener. The tuners are Schaller models with faux Mother of Pearl buttons. The scale length is 650mm and the nut width is 52mm.

The Duesenberg Starplayer Bass takes inspiration from classic German basses of the 1950’s and 1960’s, but with significant improvements. The Starplayer Bass uses single cutaway hollow body with laminated Spruce top on a laminated Flame Maple back and bent Maple sides. The Maple neck is short scale – 30.3 inch or 770mm – and has a bound Rosewood fingerboard, plus a dual-action truss rod.

Dieter Hopf’s family has been building for over three centuries, and his collaboration with Manuel Adalid, the Artista Membrane, uses the newest techniques. This unique design is a limited double top – the marked oval area visible on the cedar top is less than 2mm thick, but lattice braced with a carbon fiber layer. The result is an exceptionally loud voice, its tone tempered by the standard cedar top areas, with great projection.
