Based on the Club guitar, the Hofner 500/2 Club Bass was introduced in 1965 and built to 1970. It was never as popular as its cousin the 500/1 violin or ‘Beatle Bass’, but its more traditional single cutaway guitar shape perhaps works a bit better without a strap.

Hofner built the model 4574 from 1960 to 1974, and technically the ‘Verithin’ name applies to the Selmer-branded guitars – but as they are otherwise extremely similar, the name has crossed brand boundaries.

Walter Hofner conceived of the idea of a short scale violin shaped hollow electric bass guitar in 1955 and introduced the finished product at the Frankfurt trade show in 1956. Little did Hofner know that as the ‘Beatle Bass’ this new instrument was to become the flagship of the company for decades to come!
