Pensa Custom MK-1 Tobacco Sunburst, 1995

Pensa Custom MK-1 Tobacco Sunburst, 1995

Shown here is a Pensa Custom MK-1 built during 1995 in New York City by Rudy Pensa. The MK designation stands for Mark Knopfler. The original MK model was designed by Pensa and Knopfler to create a guitar capable of sounding like the 1961 Strat and 1958 Les Paul Knopfler was using on stage, allowing him to use only one guitar.

The Gibson ES-339 was built from 2007 until the Gibson Memphis plant closed in 2019, and the 339 is now built in Nashville with some small changes. In 1996, Gibson launched the short-lived ES-336, a scaled-down version of the classic ES-335. Making its debut appearance in 1969, the Gibson Les Paul Deluxe layout was based on the 1950’s pre-humbucker P-90 models. The Deluxe body construction uses the same Maple cap on a Mahogany back as the Standard humbucker version, but the pickup routes accept either P-90s or mini-humbuckers which are mounted in P-90 sized support rings.

⚌Reduced‼ Gibson ES-335TD CRS Country Rock Stereo Sunburst, 1979

⚌Reduced‼ Gibson ES-335TD CRS Country Rock Stereo Sunburst, 1979

Here we are treated to a real rarity! In 1979, the Gibson ES-335TD CRS – Country Rock Stereo – appeared in a limited run of 300 pieces. These were hot-rodded versions of the standard 335. A less elaborate version, the Country Rock Regular was also sold, with standard mono wiring and stop tailpiece. This example is in good condition with light fret and play wear, but a few marks to the back finish. It plays well, and the electronics setup offers a wide range of tonal options.
