The Hofner 1961 Cavern bass was very popular in Europe during the late 1950s and early 1960’s. American built instruments were rare and expensive, and use by wildly successful bands such as The Beatles made everyone want one. At the time, the tiny Cavern Club in London was one of the key venues for aspiring bands to appear, and The Beatles played there so often the club name became closely associated with the band.

From 2004, this Dieter Hopf Gran Concierto features a radial-braced red cedar top, Amazonian Rosewood back and sides, ebony for the fingerboard and an acoustically ported ebony bridge. The neck is mahogany with an ebony stiffener. The tuners are Schaller models with faux Mother of Pearl buttons. The scale length is 650mm and the nut width is 52mm.

The Rickard Maple Ridge Frailing Banjo is an open back, frailing style instrument built in Aurora, Ontario by Bill Rickard who also crafts the metal components. This lovely, very well made banjo features a three-piece laminated maple neck with a two-way adjustable truss rod, 25.5 inch scale ebony fingerboard with Frailing scoop, and ‘dot and star’ inlay pattern. The eleven inch diameter pot uses a 3/8 inch maple rim and a Rickard-made, Dobson style tone ring. Tuners are by Gotoh and are quite good.

Introduced in 1965, the Martin D12-35 is the 12-string version of the classic Martin D35, visually notable with its three piece Rosewood back. The three-piece design was introduced partly because of simple market forces – larger sized pieces of Rosewood, particularly Brazilian, were becoming scarcer and more expensive. By 1967, Martin was phasing out the use of Brazilian Rosewood, but it appeared on guitars into 1970 until the stocks were completely exhausted.
