Gibson Flying V Black, 1993

Gibson Flying V Black, 1993

The Gibson Flying V was introduced in 1958 as part of an effort by Ted McCarty to modernize Gibson’s reputation with futuristic designs, along with the Explorer and the only-prototyped Moderne. While a few prominent players immediately picked up the Flying V, it was not popular and production ceased by 1959. During 1963, a few were built from leftover parts, but the two initial 1958 production batches totaled around 80 instruments.

Gibson Les Paul Studio 'Les Paul 100' Manhattan Midnight Blue, 2015

The Gibson Les Paul Studio line delivers all the core features of a Les Paul at a lower price, and this is largely achieved by reducing decoration. The body and neck are not bound, and the Maple top is a ‘B’ grade, which is a visual rating (and it should be noted that many historic ‘Gold Top’ models also used Maple of this grade). However, there’s no skimping on the hardware.

Reduced❗️ Fender Jazz Bass 1975 Reissue Natural, 2001

The Fender Jazz Bass used the same proven Fender construction, with an Alder or Ash body and bolt on Maple neck. At 1960, Fender was learning how to add Rosewood fingerboards to their necks, and this was partly to win Gibson players over. The Jazz Bass had the new ‘offset’ body style, and a pair of single coil pickups. The earliest models used two concentric pots, each controlling volume and tone for one pickup. This soon gave way to the modern layout, of two volumes and one master tone control.

New pickups were installed, and the output jack went on the side – in this case, a Neutrix locking jack. With the three pickup switches, all pickup combinations are available. Not so immediately apparent is the routing. From the top, this guitar looks very much like a Stratocaster.
